BC Mining Month

As we commemorate BC Mining Month 2025, Fernie stands as a testament to the enduring significance of mining in British Columbia. The theme, “Mining Our Future,” aptly captures the pivotal role mining plays in clean energy, economic development, and community collaboration .

Founded in the late 19th century, Fernie’s identity has been intrinsically linked to coal mining. While the establishment of the ski hill in 1966 and the rise of mountain biking have diversified our economy, mining remains a cornerstone of our community.

A recent Deloitte study highlights that the Elk Valley steelmaking coal operations contribute approximately $6.3 billion to Canada’s GDP and sustain over 30,000 jobs nationwide . In British Columbia alone, these operations account for $4.6 billion in GDP and support nearly 12,820 jobs. Locally, mining activities contribute to 80% of the GDP in the region encompassing Fernie, Sparwood, and Elkford, with nearly half of all jobs in these communities linked to mining.

The recent acquisition of a 77% interest in Teck’s steelmaking coal business by Glencore for $6.93 billion underscores the global importance of our local resources . This transition brings with it commitments to maintain significant employment levels and uphold environmental responsibilities, ensuring that the community continues to benefit from mining activities .

As we look to the future, it’s clear that mining will continue to play a vital role in Fernie’s economy and identity. For those interested in learning more about our mining heritage and ongoing developments, visit ElkValleyCoal.com
