2024 was a standout year for Wildsight’s Local store, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Fernie’s community-driven local food movement. With the addition of 19 new vendors, an expanded team, and the installation of improved refrigeration equipment, Local has enhanced its ability to provide fresh, locally-sourced food to the Elk Valley year-round.
Since its launch in 2020, Local has achieved a remarkable milestone, paying out over $1 million to regional farms and food producers. By offering a low-barrier platform to connect with customers, the store has fostered a thriving local food culture, empowering producers and strengthening community ties.
This commitment to sustainability and community impact earned Local the 2024 Business of the Year award at the Fernie Business Excellence Awards and was mentioned in Fernie’s 2024 Milestones. The accolades are a reflection of Local’s growing role in expanding food access, educating the community on the importance of supporting local agriculture, and nurturing a resilient regional food system.
Wildsight Elk Valley extends heartfelt thanks to the farmers, small-scale food producers, volunteers, donors, and customers who have made Local’s success possible. As the store continues to grow, its mission remains clear: to champion local food production and create lasting benefits for the Elk Valley.
