Local Grassroots Organizations

Since forming in 2020, 100 Women Who Care Fernie has grown into one of the Elk Valley’s most inspiring grassroots fundraising networks — a simple idea with a remarkable impact. Over the past five years, this collective of local women has raised more than $84,000 for charities and non-profits across the region, helping to strengthen everything from food security to women’s services and environmental programs.

The group follows a straightforward model: each member donates $100, three charities are nominated and presented, and the group votes to decide which two organizations will receive the funds. The results are immediate — and the impact is tangible. At their most recent November gathering, members raised $10,412 for three community organizations: the Triangle Women’s Institute, the Elk Valley Family Society (Chrysalis House), and Fernie Adaptive Snowsports. Earlier events have supported groups such as Wildsight Elk Valley, Elk Valley Hospice, Caregivers Network for Seniors, and Angel Flight East Kootenay.

Now, the group is refining its approach. Beginning this year, 100 Women Who Care Fernie will host one annual giving event each November instead of two separate gatherings. The change, says co-founder Cindy Pearson, will allow the team of volunteers to focus their efforts and create a more meaningful experience for members.

“With volunteers managing logistics, marketing, and communications, focusing on one major event ensures a smoother, more impactful experience for our membership,” Pearson explained.

The decision reflects the group’s evolution from a small community idea into a well-organized, trusted source of local support. Each event has become more than just a fundraiser — it’s a celebration of connection, generosity, and the shared belief that collective action can create real change close to home.

Women from across the Elk Valley are encouraged to take part in this year’s gathering. The Annual Giving Event takes place on Wednesday, November 6th, and promises to be an evening of inspiration, community, and collaboration.
