fantastic snowpack

Fernie is fortunate to welcome the New Year with a fantastic snowpack, thanks to an impressive 73 cm of fresh snowfall over the past seven days! After last winters low snowpack and challenging avalanche conditions, this season has started with a refreshing return to “average.”

Fernie Alpine Resort now has a 220 cm base with 444 total snowfall this season and the Morrissey snow-plot shows that the snowpack is tracking the 30 year average.

Happy New Year

November brought steady storms, building a solid snowpack without many notable weak layers or crusts. This translates into the backcountry being relatively safe this year. Following the avalanche conditions on avalanche.ca is always mandatory.

December ended with a biggie. The storm that began on December 27th brought 73 cm’s of snow to Fernie. And the action isn’t over yet—January is always a big snow month.

Get out there on your skis, snowboard, snow shoes, snowmobiles, fat bike or whatever your Winter medium might be and have a Happy New Year!
