The City of Fernie Council has announced a significant contribution of $525,000, along with a commitment to a long-term lease of city-owned land, in support of the Elk Valley Field House Society (EVFHS) proposal for a new multi-use field house. This facility is set to be built on the current outdoor rink site next to the Fernie Aquatic Centre, offering flexible indoor space for a variety of recreational, sporting, and community activities.
Since the decommissioning of the Community Centre, the EVFHS has been working closely with local groups and residents to bring this proposal to life. The field house is envisioned as a community hub, operated by the Society, featuring multi-purpose gym space and adaptable areas for events and gatherings.
“We’re thrilled to take this major step in supporting the Elk Valley Field House project by confirming $525,000 in funding and backing the use of the outdoor rink site,” said Deputy Mayor Ted Shoesmith. “We appreciate the hard work of the Society and believe this project will offer vital indoor space for recreation, wellness, and community events that are so important for Fernie.”
This funding and land commitment from the City will enable the EVFHS to move forward with detailed design plans, secure additional funding, and begin construction.
Aysha Haines, speaking on behalf of the EVFHS, expressed gratitude for the City’s support: “We are delighted by Council’s unanimous decision to allocate $525,000 and work towards securing a long-term lease for the land next to the Aquatic Centre. This demonstrates a shared vision of creating a much-needed recreational and gathering space for Elk Valley residents and visitors.”
As the project advances, the City will continue to collaborate with the EVFHS and provide public updates on its progress. The EVFHS is planning information sessions and encourages community members interested in getting involved to reach out at info@fernierec.com.
