The Fernie Seed Swap brings local gardeners together to share seeds, knowledge, and practical strategies for growing food in Fernie’s short-season, cold-climate conditions. Hosted by Wildsight Elk Valley, the gathering focuses on strengthening local food resilience through seed saving and community connection.

Seeds will be available for sale or swap. Participants are encouraged to bring seeds they have grown and exchange them with other local gardeners. Those without seeds to share are welcome to take what they would like to plant, with a small cash donation appreciated.

Seeds grown in Fernie and the Elk Valley are naturally adapted to the region’s unique climate and often perform better than non-local varieties.

Also featured at the swap:
• Information on composting, seed saving, and sustainable gardening
• The Cold Climate Seed Library
• Keeping Food Real cold climate gardening education
• Seeds of Diversity Canada
• Wildrose Heritage Seeds
• East Kootenay Invasive Species Council
• Kids’ activities
• Door prizes
• Café

Community members with surplus garden seeds are encouraged to share them. Cleaned and clearly labeled seeds, including as much information about the plant as possible, can be dropped off in advance at The Local store, 632 2nd Avenue in Fernie, or brought directly to the swap.

Questions can be directed to garden.fernie@gmail.com

The Fernie Seed Swap is open to gardeners of all ages and experience levels and continues to support sustainable, locally adapted food growing in the Elk Valley.
