I must admit that I was skeptical that FernieFest would actually happen this year; that was until I attended my first meeting last night. I was very impressed throughout the meeting with the amount of effort that has been put into this event, but the budget was of course the great concern of many attendees. However, once we got to the topic of the budget, I was pleasantly surprised. This event is actually going to happen this year and it could well make a profit for next year?Ç‚Äôs event (with local support). The sponsorship proposal is professional and I can’t think of anyone in town who wouldn’t sponsor this event if they could afford it (and buying a ticket in advance is a form of sponsorship). They have organized a bottle drive (to be held next Wednesday for anyone who wants to help out) and have applied for and received grants. Their breakeven point is very low, and the ticket prices are very affordable as well as vending fees. The lineup looks great and there are lots of extra activities planned. The people in charge of organizing this event have spent a great deal of time and effort so far and now that the marketing is in place and the event has to go ahead, it’s time for us all to get involved and be a part of this. We need to make sure that what these people have done gets rewarded and to make sure that they aren’t out of pocket. The more money they receive in advance, the better the show that they can put on. We also need to show the rest of Canada what Fernie has to offer. If I know one thing about Fernieites, it’s that no matter what your age, you all love a good party.
