Hi me and my partner are coming to Fernie on the 24th Jan and wondered if anyone had any helpful information. Also just wondered if people use snow blades in Fernie or is it just skis and snowboards? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I’ll tell you a little secret about snow blade use. If you want some of the coolest spiral fracture x-rays taken, try snow blades. Big mountain big planks. Kimberly has better terrain for snowblades.

Hi, thanks for the info so far, any further comments on snow blade use in fernie would be appreciated along with any info about lift passes, ie when to get them, how much they are etc. Also wheres the best place to hire snow baord and boots and ski’s or blades? We are with Inghams, is it best to pre-book lessons on coach or on arrival at resort? Finally we are coming as part of the ‘square deal’ deal with Inghams and this means allocation on arrival, if anyone knows where this is likely to be it would be nice to know in advance. Thanks again.

Lot’s of good info here: http://far.redtree.com/cgi-bin/far/index.py
I don’t see that many snow blades on the hill, so I would be surprised if they are available at the rental shops. You might contact the hill and the Ski Base first to check it out.
It’s usually pretty easy to book lessons at the hill, you might want to call them directly and compare the price with what you are being offered through your tour operator.

It has been my experience that snow blades are fun toys to play on fun hills with. Fernie is a mountain. You’ll have fun messing around on the bottom runs where the snow is packed down but if you want to experience the whole mountain you probably won’t enjoy it. One of our buddies used to insist on snowblading when he came with us and we CONSTANTLY had to wait for him when we were up high because he would just sink in the snow and be digging himself out every 50 feet. When he did manage to stay on top of the snow his maximum speed was not speed at all. I guess if everyone you are with is snowblading you might have a good time, but if you’re going with boarders or skiers, do them a favor and skip the blades.

Inghams used to stay at the Stamford Inn, when it was called the Riverside. I don’t know if they still use that accommodation. I think they also use the Park Place Lodge.
For rentals, you have a lot of choices. In town there are several places on 2nd Ave that do rentals, you’ll get great service by experienced technicians and probably good rates too. There’s also a rental place on the highway, which would be handy if your accommodation is on the highway. On the hill there is the resort rental shop, which is very convenient if you want to change anything. There’s also Quest rentals at Lizard Creek Lodge which offer great service, and boot fitting specialists at the Griz Inn who have been voted the best in Canada.
I’d have to go with the majority on the snow blades. To get the most out of Fernie’s slopes you need to get off the groomers, on blades you’ll just be stuck the whole time. I skied with a blader once, who said the only reason he used them was because it was the only thing he could use due to injuries to his elbows and hips, but if he had a choice, he’d be skiing. You don’t see blades here much.
You don’t really need to book lessons in advance, I’d wait till you get here. Lift tickets? Lets just say be prepared to earn a lot of airmiles on your credit card. Check out http://www.skifernie.com for rates etc. I would definately allow at least one day for an alternate activity, like cat-skiing, dog-sledding or getting a guide to take you back country.
BTW, it’s been snowing pretty much non-stop since November. You’re gonna have a blast.
