I live in West Fernie and am not quite sure of the by-laws here concerning dogs. I have been wanting to write on here since the summer but just putting it off until now. I am getting really sick of loose dogs running free through the neighborboud. They come into my yard and go to the washroom wherever. For example this summer on my flower pots and my bike. Even more annoying tromping through my freshly planted garden in my back yard. One of the things that really frustrates me is when dogs(usually more then one)come to the yard in which my dogs are fenced in and bark at my dogs. Lots of the time trying to attack through the fence and getting my dogs all worked up. There is one dog in particular in my neighborhood that I think should never be off a leash or unsupervised. It is a bigger black dog who has a very bad tempermant. I would say he is viscious. This dog is allowed to run free sometimes which I think is so irresponsible of the owner. He has chased me on my bike and visciously attacks my dogs through the fence. It is sad but I am nervous to walk my dogs down the street because of this. I know that there has been incidents with this dog in the past but the owner does not seem to care because things have not changed. I know that if there is one more situation I wil be contacting the cops or city because I am totally sick of it. I just find this all so frustrating because I keep my dogs fenced in. If they are in the yard barking I go see why and will bring them in or tell them to be quite. Overall I just wish that people would keep control of their dogs and not let them roam free.

I completely agree! I don’t live in west Fernie, but when my dog went missing last month and I spent every waking hour looking for her, I noticed at least 5 or 6 dogs just roaming around West Fernie every time I drove through there. This is not only irriating to the people that live there and have to clean up someone else’s mess, it is dangerous. The dogs could get hurt or run over, cause accidents, hurt someone if they attack, not to mention the fact that since there are so many dogs roaming free in the area when I was missing mine no one even noticed because it’s "just another dog".
It’s really irresponsible and actually VERY mean for the amazing animals to be left to their own devices and not kept in a yard or a house. PLEASE keep your animals safe and in their own yard.

West Fernie is an off leash area for dogs. People who buy places or rent in West Fernie know of this and are happy to move there with their dogs, as a so called "dog friendly" area. I have many friends who move there because it is an off leash area. It is sad though that people with mean dogs don’t control them. But off leash is the nature of the area.

West Fernie is not regulated by the City of Fernie bylaws or bylaw enforcement. If you are having problems with a dog in particular, please note that West Fernie is under the RDEK’s jurisidction. Or call SPCA (also in Cranbrook area). You may also want to phone the RDEK to check out their bylaws, but I am pretty sure they don’t have anything for dogs.

      Good luck.

I must live in a different part of west fernie. I have only noticed one or two dogs roaming in my neighbourhood. I know that my 13 year old poodle is not going to hurt anyone by being off leash and my other dogs are fenced in with the exception of a 12 year old border collie who is our houdini and manages to escape regularly. I agree that there must be a roaming dog problem because I keep hearing about it, but I have yet to see it.
As for the mean black dog, I would suggest you talk to its owner and let them know you don’t feel safe with it wandering. Definately give the police a call if you need to, that is just not right. Perhaps these owners will learn a very sad lesson when their pets get killed by a car when wandering toward the highway.
