Summer employment does exist in Fernie. I suggest checking out Fernie Alpine Resort and the Golf course. Once in town, visit the youth center or Elk Valley Job Seekers for more specific information.
As for getting to the ski hill from town, Kootenay Taxi runs several shuttle busses everyday. These are inexpensive and pretty reliable.
You can bike to the resort in the summer in about 30 minutes at a moderate pace.
