The Ponies & Planks Skijoring Fundraiser in Fernie is exactly the kind of winter event this town does best — fast horses, flying snow, big laughs, and a crowd that shows up ready for a good time.
Part ski race, part horse power, and fully Kootenay, Ponies & Planks has quickly become one of Fernie’s most entertaining winter spectacles. It’s loud, energetic, and unapologetically fun — with skiers and snowboarders being towed at speed behind horses through a course packed with jumps, gates, berms, and snow-spraying turns.
The best part? All that action actually makes a difference.
In 2025, the event helped fund more than 2,500 therapeutic riding and equine-assisted learning sessions delivered by Freedom Equine Association. Funds raised reduced the real cost of programs so kids, youth, adults, schools, and support groups from across the Elk Valley could take part.
The model is simple and very Fernie: volunteers make it happen, instructors are paid for the sessions they teach, and every dollar raised goes straight back into programs — not overhead.
Now, the Ponies & Planks Skijoring Fundraiser is gearing up for another big year.
The 3rd annual event takes place Saturday, February 14, 2026, and brings some fresh energy to the course. New for 2026 are an updated race layout, wild intermission entertainment, and more opportunities for spectators to get involved.
Teams of two — one horseback rider and one skier or snowboarder — will race the clock for bragging rights and the highly unofficial but deeply respected title of Fastest Team in Fernie.
If you’re looking for a winter event that combines snow, speed, horses, and classic Fernie community spirit, this is it.
