In a display of discipline, teamwork, and life-saving expertise, local mine rescue teams from Elk Valley Resources (EVR) stood out at the 2025 East Kootenay Mining Industrial Safety Association (EKMISA) Mine Rescue Competition held this past weekend. With strong finishes across multiple categories, teams from Line Creek, Greenhills, and Fording River Operations proved once again that the Elk Valley is home to some of the most capable and committed emergency responders in the province.
The EKMISA competition is an annual test of emergency preparedness, bringing together teams from across the East Kootenay region to compete in simulated rescue scenarios, first aid drills, and technical challenges. Each team is led by an Emergency Response Coordinator (ERC) and trained rigorously to meet real-world emergency response standards.

Taking home 1st place in the 6 Person Mine Rescue category was the team from EVR’s Line Creek Operations, led by ERC Alex Isaacs. Team members included Captain Harley Marshall, Vice Captain Kyle Brennan, and rescuers Jay Marshall, Kyle Laboucane, JP Wallin, Kenan Ligertwood, and spare Coleen O’Neil. Their performance in the mock emergency scenarios showed outstanding coordination, technical skill, and leadership.
In the 3 Person First Aid category, the winning team came from EVR’s Greenhills Operations, led by ERC Dylan Gray. With Captain Jordan Halladay, team members Josh Prince, Kevin Edwards, and spare Ethan Lukkar, Greenhills demonstrated advanced first aid proficiency and quick, calm decision-making under pressure.
Meanwhile, the Fording River Operations teams earned second place in both categories, underscoring the deep talent and training bench across all EVR operations in the Elk Valley.
With these results, the winning and runner-up teams will go on to represent the East Kootenays Zone at the Provincial Mine Rescue Competition taking place June 6–7, 2025, at the Britannia Mine Museum near Squamish, BC. This provincial event is a prestigious opportunity to showcase the strength and preparedness of mining teams from across British Columbia.

Mine rescue competitions are more than a test of skills—they are a reminder of the risks involved in industrial work and the high level of training that ensures worker safety. In an industry where seconds matter and teamwork saves lives, these competitions highlight the incredible preparation and professionalism of Elk Valley’s emergency response crews.
Fernie.com congratulates all the participating teams, especially those heading to provincials next month. Your commitment to safety, community, and excellence is something the entire region can be proud of.
