Today’s snowfall warning isn’t just about winter travel—it’s brushing right up against a long-standing Fernie tradition. Environment Canada is calling for 15–25 cm of snow in the southern Elk Valley, putting the community squarely in “20 cm rule” territory.
For the uninitiated, the 20 cm rule is simple: when Fernie gets 20 cm overnight, people go skiing instead of going to work.
With snowfall intensifying this morning and continuing through the day into tonight, conditions are lining up for:
• Deepening turns and soft landings
• Classic Fernie tree skiing
• A strong chance of locals “working remotely” from the chairlift
While travel may be challenging and visibility reduced at times, those who can safely make it up the hill may be rewarded with one of those quietly legendary midweek Fernie snow days.
As always, drive to conditions—but don’t be surprised if offices are a little quieter tomorrow morning.
