The City of Fernie has released its 2024 Annual Municipal Report, showcasing key accomplishments and outlining priorities for the coming years. Mayor Nic Milligan highlighted several community-focused initiatives that marked significant progress in 2024.
A major step forward was the introduction of Small-scale Multi-unit Housing regulations, supporting increased density through zoning bylaw revisions. In technology enhancements, the implementation of Cloudpermit, an online portal for building and development applications, is nearing completion, with a full rollout expected in early 2025.
Significant progress was also noted in housing and childcare initiatives, including the redevelopment of the old fire hall site and the childcare and housing pilot project adjacent to the Aquatic Centre. Both projects are anticipated to break ground in 2025, reflecting the city’s commitment to addressing community needs.
Environmental sustainability was emphasized through the launch of a curbside organics program aimed at waste diversion and GHG emissions reduction. Water conservation efforts included updating water bylaws and performing critical infrastructure improvements such as reservoir rehabilitation and leak detection.
Community recreation received notable attention with the official opening of the new skate park, already becoming a popular local hub. Additionally, the city supported interim solutions following the Community Centre closure, partnering with the Elk Valley Fieldhouse Society to provide continued recreational space.
Reconciliation efforts saw Fernie deepen its relationship with Yaq ̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation, hosting the first community-to-community meeting and raising the Yaq ̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it flag at City Hall.
Looking forward, the city will continue prioritizing essential infrastructure projects, including the upcoming referendum for the proposed new Fire Hall, improvements to wastewater systems, and further developments in active transportation networks.
