The Fernie Ghostriders are moving on in the KIJHL playoffs after defeating the Golden Rockets 5–4 in overtime Saturday night in Golden, winning the best-of-seven series four games to two.
The dramatic overtime victory capped a hard-fought opening round between the rivals. With the series tied heading into the weekend, the Ghostriders delivered when it mattered most, scoring the game-winner in extra time to eliminate the Rockets on their home ice.
The win sends the Fernie Ghostriders into the next round of the KIJHL playoffs, where they will face a familiar and formidable opponent — the Kimberley Dynamiters, the Eddie Mountain Division champions and long-time rivals of the Riders.
The upcoming matchup renews one of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s most intense rivalries. Fernie and Kimberley have battled for decades in front of passionate crowds in both communities, and playoff meetings between the two teams are often among the most electric series in the league.
Fernie will need to bring its momentum from the Golden series into the next round. The overtime win demonstrated the resilience of the Ghostriders roster, which showed the ability to grind out close games and perform under pressure.
With the Dynamiters finishing atop the division during the regular season, the series will be a major test for the Riders as they continue their playoff push.
For Fernie fans, the reward is clear: another chapter in the historic Ghostriders–Dynamiters rivalry, with a trip deeper into the KIJHL playoffs on the line.
Fernie hockey fans are encouraged to pack Fernie Memorial Arena and support the Ghostriders as they take on Kimberley in what promises to be an intense Eddie Mountain Division playoff battle.
