Elk Valley Regional RCMP have confirmed that a contractor has died following a serious mining incident at Elkview Operations in Sparwood.
At approximately 07:00 on November 20, RCMP were notified of a missing worker at the mine site. A 39-year-old man from Hosmer was reported unaccounted for, prompting an immediate search led by Elk Valley Resources (EVR) Mine Rescue teams. RCMP supported the initial response and remained in communication with EVR throughout the search.
RCMP confirmed this morning that the contractor was found deceased and that his remains have been recovered. The BC Coroners Service is now on scene, working alongside RCMP investigators. The Ministry of Mining has also been notified and will conduct its own investigation in coordination with provincial authorities and EVR.
Next-of-kin notification was completed earlier today with support from EVR management. RCMP expressed condolences to all affected, stating that the name of the deceased will not be released at this time.
EVR also issued a statement acknowledging the loss:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a contractor employee has died following an incident that occurred during maintenance work on November 19, 2025, at our Elkview Operations. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of this person. This is an incredibly difficult time for our Elkview Operations workforce, and we are ensuring support services and counselling are available,” said EVR CEO Mike Carrucan.
EVR added that all regulatory agencies and authorities have been notified and that a full investigation is now underway.
