Aa Alberta fugitive was apprehended in Fernie Thursday afternoon following a coordinated police response involving multiple armed RCMP officers.

Eyewitnesses reported a strong police presence near the main entrance to the Fernie airport, close to the large brick house on the airport road, where traffic was stopped and officers could be seen outside their vehicles wearing vests and visibly armed. The scene was secured with a tactical perimeter extending to James White Park, which was temporarily blocked off.

RCMP have since confirmed that the suspect was apprehended safely and that no injuries were reported.

The man taken into custody is believed to be Kevin James Connolly, 35, who was the subject of an active Canada-wide warrant originating from Alberta. Connolly was under strict conditions not to leave Alberta but had been recently spotted in southeastern British Columbia. Earlier this week, Cranbrook RCMP issued a public warning, advising residents not to approach Connolly and to report any sightings.

Connolly is described as 5’11”, approximately 181 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is known to have facial scars near his right eye, forehead, and chin.

The RCMP issued a community update late Thursday afternoon, thanking residents for their cooperation during the “serious incident” and noting that their ability to work safely and effectively was aided by the public’s patience.

“We can confirm that the suspect involved has been apprehended. At this time, the matter remains under investigation. Unless criminal charges are formally sworn, no further updates will be provided,” stated RCMP officials.

The full details surrounding the arrest have not been released, but RCMP maintain that there is no further risk to the public.
