Thomas McDonald Set to Be Acclaimed as Area A Director

Area A Director Thomas McDonald is set to be acclaimed for a second term after going uncontested in the 2026 General Local Election.

Nominations closed September 11 with no challenger stepping forward, leaving McDonald uncontested for Electoral Area A Director.

McDonald was first elected in 2022 and has established a reputation for balanced, practical and thoughtful representation of Area A. His approach has been grounded in listening to residents, understanding the different interests across the region and working toward achievable solutions.

During his first term, McDonald has supported a number of important Area A initiatives, including the Fernie Valley Pathway, the long-planned active transportation connection between Fernie and Fernie Alpine Resort. He has also been involved in improvements to recreation and river access, community trails, the Hosmer Fire Hall planning process, and advocacy on issues affecting rural residents, including concerns surrounding the proposed Dicken Road highway detour.

Area A is geographically large and diverse, encompassing rural communities with different priorities and challenges. McDonald has brought a steady and considered approach to those issues while remaining accessible to the residents he represents.

Going uncontested reflects the support he has built throughout Area A and the confidence residents have placed in his leadership.

The acclamation will become official September 21 following the statutory period for candidate withdrawals and challenges.
