Liam Breakenridge named Ghostriders captain for the 2026–27 season as the Fernie Ghostriders begin a new era of Junior A hockey.
Breakenridge enters his third season with the Ghostriders and has earned the captaincy through what Head Coach and General Manager Chad Scharff describes as his work ethic, character, honesty and team-first approach.
“Liam is the true definition of a leader who brings his teammates together and inspires those around him to be better,” Scharff said. “His character, commitment and team-first mentality makes him the perfect fit to lead this year’s team.”
Breakenridge says he is grateful for the opportunity and recognizes the responsibility that comes with wearing the “C.”
“Having the chance to lead a group like this is really special,” Breakenridge said.
He pointed to Hale, Samycia, Jones and Buchanan as part of a strong leadership group in the dressing room, while also crediting former Ghostriders captains Taylor Haggerty and Ben Skarsen as players he can learn from.
“We’re incredibly fortunate to have a surplus of strong leaders,” Breakenridge said. “I’m fired up!”
A New League for the Ghostriders
The 2026–27 season marks a major change for Fernie hockey. The Ghostriders have moved from the KIJHL into the new British Columbia Hockey Conference (BCHC), BC Hockey’s sanctioned Junior A league.
Fernie is one of 22 BCHC teams and will compete in the Kootenay Division alongside the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, Columbia Valley Rockies, Grand Forks Border Bruins, Kimberley Dynamiters and Nelson Leafs. The inaugural season features a 50-game schedule, with 25 games at home and 25 on the road.
Ghostriders Season Opener
Fernie opens its first BCHC regular season at home on Friday, September 25, against the Revelstoke Grizzlies at the Fernie Memorial Arena. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
The Riders are back at home the following night, Saturday, September 26, against the Columbia Valley Rockies, also at 7 p.m.
