Fernie has said goodbye in recent months to two of its most beloved residents, Mary and Nick Giuliano, whose lives were defined by their deep love for each other and the community they cherished.

Mary Giuliano: A Life of Service and Dedication
Born on May 3, 1945, in Italy, Mary immigrated to Fernie in May 1953. She dedicated her life to public service, serving as a city councillor from 2002 to 2011 and as mayor from 2011 to 2018. Her leadership was characterized by a deep appreciation for Fernie’s history and a commitment to its future. Beyond politics, Mary was actively involved in various community organizations, including the Kinettes/Kinsmen Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Fernie Heritage Trust Society. She was also a cherished contributor to Fernie.com, sharing insights and profiles that enriched the community’s narrative.

Nick Giuliano: A Legacy of Hard Work and Curiosity
Nick Giuliano was born in Avellino, Italy, and immigrated to Canada in 1959, following his sister to Fernie. He began working at the sawmill in 1960 and later at Line Creek Mine, where he retired in 2004. Nick took great pride in building the home where he and Mary lived for over 50 years and enjoyed outdoor activities, often taking family road trips to explore new places. An avid reader with a love for both fiction and history, Nick was always eager to share his knowledge. In retirement, he found joy volunteering at the local museum, meeting fascinating people, and supporting Mary in her mayoral duties.
A Shared Journey
Married for 61 years, Mary and Nick’s relationship was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Whenever they were together, Nick always had a subtle smile—a quiet, content expression that seemed to say, ‘I’m with her.’ They were truly happy together.
Together, they raised four children and were blessed with two grandchildren. Their commitment to each other and to Fernie enriched the lives of all who knew them. Their legacy will forever live on in the hearts of their family and the broader community.
Fernie will never be the same without Mary and Nick Giuliano. Their contributions to our town’s spirit, culture, and community are immeasurable. As we mourn their loss, we also celebrate the remarkable lives they led and the lasting impact they had on all of us.
