On July 7th, the Sri Chinmoy Peace Run made its stop through Fernie. The international run began in 1987 and has continued its message for peace as the world’s largest torch running relay.

It has so far involved more than 10 million people in over 150 countries. The current North American 2014 relay began in New York on April 10th, will conclude on August 15th and will span Canada, the United States and Mexico.

On Monday, runners traveled from Kimberly to Fernie where they stopped at the Fernie City Hall and were greeted by Mayor Mary Giuliano and councilor Dan McSkimming.

Dan McSkimming read aloud the Proclamation of Peace and Friendship signed by the Fernie Town Council, which joins the town with numerous others across Canada and the United States in a pursuit of peace.

Fire chief Ted Ruiter then invited the runners to board the antique fire truck for a tour of mainstreet, while racing with the torch.

The passing of the torch between people from all walks of life promotes the promise of a better and brighter future. The unity of the run will hopefully inspire that we can all make a difference.
