Fernie Bike Events is an initiative that began with bringing the TransRockies Challenge to Fernie from Germany in 2001, a pivotal moment in establishing Fernie as a premier mountain biking destination.
Dan Savage worked closely with TransRockies founders Chester Fabricius and Heinrich Albrecht to help establish the TransRockies Challenge in Western Canada. The management group for these early efforts, the Fernie TransRockies Society (FTS), was led by Savage and went on to oversee numerous national and international races, launch kids’ and adult bike events, fund trail development, and support the formation of the Fernie Trails Alliance.
Fast forward to 2013, when the final year of the TransRockies Challenge led to the introduction of Singletrack 6. The FTS then rebranded and expanded into new events, including the Fernie 3 and the Fernie Enduro. Both races were designed to showcase Fernie’s trails, attract riders from across North America, and maintain local event management.
In 2017, the Fernie Lucky 7’s was introduced as an event designed to be more inclusive and sustainable for riders of all levels. It was a great success and returned in 2018, but that was its final year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fernie Enduro was reintroduced and adapted by shifting to a virtual format. Since then, Dan Savage has remained involved in mountain biking events, continuing to work with event producers, including the TransRockies, while developing new plans for inclusive and sustainable events in Fernie.
Heinrich Albrecht continues to be a partner at TransRockies Inc. and still owns and manages bike events in Germany. Chester Fabricius now resides in the U.S. and works in the golf events industry.
Dan Savage remains an avid rider and active participant in bike events. Last year, he rode in BCBR’s Mega Volt, TransRockies Gravel Royale, and the Anything Goes Fernie Gravel Grind. Beyond events, Dan also rode Fernie Alpine Resort’s Timber Chair while it was running, explored Fernie’s 400 km trail network, and took several bike trips to incredible destinations, including Legacy Bike Park in Montana, 3 Blind Mice in Naramata, Mt. Abriel in Nakusp, Merry Creek Trails in Castlegar, Bootleg Trails in Kimberley, and the Community Forest in Cranbrook.
Fernie’s cycling legacy continues to grow, thanks to passionate individuals and the collective efforts of the Fernie biking community, who continue to push the boundaries of adventure, events, and trail development.

The Fernie Lucky 7’s replaced the Fernie 3. The Fernie 3 was a three-day XC endurance stage race that was held for three years and raised money for trails and charity, and supported youth cycling. For those of you who love the Fernie 3, there is a possibility it will return in future years.
The organizers needed a break from the Fernie 3—events need to be sustainable. Overlap with other Fernie events created a shortage of volunteers and resources, and this led us to change the format to a one day event.
The Intense Fernie 3 would like to extend a huge thank you to all the participants, sponsors and volunteers that made the event possible and a success. Over 300 participants braved the spring weather and rode their best in and around Fernie. Our sponsors were a collection of the best that engaged the event and made it spectacular. And the volunteers were there every day with a commitment that was admirable.
A special thanks to our title sponsor, iconic American mountain bike brand Intense Cycles USA (through their Canadian distributor, Outdoor Gear Canada), for their generous support. Intense Cycles USA demoed a fleet of bikes, provided excellent prizing and donated a Tracer 275 bike frame that was raffled off to a lucky winner by the Fernie Mountain Bike Club. Andrew Robinson from Calgary took home the prize and was ecstatic he had won – “This gives me a good excuse to come back and ride in Fernie! I really enjoyed the race, had a great time.”

Extended gratitude to: Montane Fernie – building local trails and community, and Smith Sport Optics – continuing to set the standard for high performance optics. These sponsors contributed significantly to the success of the event.

TinHorn Creek Winery, Fernie Brewing Company and Camelbak are to thank for their contributions to prizing for the fastest racers. The top three participants in each category took home a Camelbak each, a bottle of fine TinHorn Creek Merlot or Pinot Grigio, and a six-pack of FBC’s popular Project 9 Pils. The top two contestants each took home a pair of Smith Optics Overdrive or V2 sunglasses.
Teck Coal Ltd supported the U16 and U13 XC race, the first in Fernie, and it was an epic success. All the participants went home wearing a Fernie 3 jersey and a new Camelbak.
Straight Line Bicycle, the Fernie Chamber, the Fernie Fire Hall and the Fernie Heritage Library were key to The Kids Bike Rally; a massive success which had 150 participants. The young cyclists were supplied with Teck packs that included a t-shirt, bike safety guide and light-up spoke decals.
Hammer Nutrition fueled riders throughout the weekend with its diverse line of products. Everything from Heed sports drink, energy bars, gel packets to recoverite were provided to keep energy high and assist participants to perform their best.
Thanks to sponsors The Fernie Hotel, The Bridge Bistro, Extra Foods, The Free Press, and the Fernie Heritage Library for their roles in the event.
Much appreciation to the lodging companies that ensured all riders had a comfortable stay and experienced true Fernie Hospitality. Included were Park Place Lodge, the Griz Inn, Stanford Inn & Resorts, Red Tree Lodge and Fernie Central Reservations.
Partnerships with the City of Fernie, Tourism Fernie, Fernie Alpine Resort, Fernie Trails Alliance and Island Lake Lodge were greatly appreciated and ensured the events success.
Planning is already underway for next year, feel welcome to contact the organizers if you would like to participate. fts@fernie.com
