Fernie 3 Day 2 and Kids Bike Rally

The Fernie 3 was busy today with 120+ riders racing Castle Mountain, Ridgemont and the Coal Discovery Trail. The weather was less punishing today and the riders enjoyed a brief cloud coverage as they climbed Castle Mountain shortly after nine. The riders enjoyed the flow of day 2 following the intense heat and brutal climbs of day 1.

Shane Keyser of Bragg Creek retained the yellow jersey however couldn’t shake Ban Parsons of Kallispel MT and the pair crossed the finish line together with a time of 205.17. The fastest women was Sandra Walter of Coquitlam with a time of 2:15.33. Full results can be found here.

The highlight of the day was the Kids Bike Rally as 150+ plus 3 to 9 year olds’ enjoyed a swag stop at Gear Hub, bike decorations, Happy Cow Ice Cream, Ballon Tom and the water park at the Aquatic Centre.

The final day starts tomorrow at 9am at the Fernie Aquatic Centre with a 32km course with slightly less climbing. With less climbing the racers will have faster times with the fastest riders finishing around 10:30am. Drop by to catch the excitement!

A group of 160+ dedicated mountain bike racers battled grueling heat and relentless technical single-track climbs in Day one of the Fernie 3 today. Day one was the “Queen” stage with 27 kms and over 1300 meter of climbing.

Shane Keyser of Bragg Creek posted the fastest time of 2:01:01.2 and the third fastest time and top women was Sandra Walter of Coquitlam with a time of 2:03:42.6.

Following the adult race 20 plus u13 and u16 year old racer in Fenie Mountain Park. Liam Vanhooren won the u13 and Talon dominated the U16 category. See the results here.

Tomorrow the 3 Day racers continue with another big day of riding on Castle Mountain and Ridgemont. Drop by the Fernie Aquatic Centre from 9am till 2pm for all the action. The Kids’ Bike Rally, a free and educational event for 3 to 9 year old’s is from 10an to noon–register at the Gear Hub.

The Fernie TransRockies Society is very pleased to announce that Rocky Mountain Bicycles will be supporting the Fernie 3, the ultimate all-mountain three-day classic mountain bike stage race. Fernie is nested deep in the Rocky Mountains, it is a true Rocky Mountain Bicycle town. The Fernie 3 is being held on Fernie’s spectacular singletrack trails on the pre-Canada Day holiday weekend of June 27th to 29th and offers something for everyone.

The Fernie 3 will cater to all riders of all ages, both new and old, and gnarled veterans alike, with focus on fun and the best singletrack stages ever, followed by classic Fernie hospitality. The categories will feature the traditional three day stage race however will also include a one day solo, and a youth race for U12 and U16 year olds. The popular Kids’ Bike Rally will continue for its ninth year on Sunday, June 28th. Free for kids’ aged three to nine, the event is a fun and educational rally at the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

Fernie and Rocky Mountains Bicycles are legendary mountain brands with deep roots in pedal powered mountain endurance sports. “There could be no better bicycle associated with Fernie than Rocky Mountain,” said Dan Savage, Event Director. “We’re immensely pleased that they have brought their energy and experience to our event and we’re confident that they’ll help us offer our participants a better experience.”

Rocky Mountain Bicycles, in partnership with Gearhub Sports, will be offering technical support to the participants each day. “We’re very happy to be partnering Rocky Mountain Bicycles with GearHub and the Fernie 3,” said Bryan Anderson, Sales Manager of Rocky Mountain Bicycles. “Rocky Mountain Bicycles offers premium mountain bikes that are built for Fernie’s trails.” Rocky Mountain bicycles are available in Fernie at GearHub, Fernie’s favourite sports store. GearHub have 2015 Rocky Mountain Bicycles in store now.

The 2014 Fernie 3 was a success on many fronts. Over 300 riders participated and the event raised monies for trails. The organizers carefully reviewed the participant survey feedback and the 2015 Fernie 3, a 3 day XC stage race, is scheduled for June 27 to 29, 2015–early bird registration is open!

A total of $6085 in cheques was presented to the following trail organizations for user trail fees and volunteer support as follows:

Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club, Ian Stokie: $2000
Fernie Trails Alliance, Pat Gilmar: $2085
Fernie Mountain Bike Club, Martin Spencer: $2000

The Fernie Mountain Bike Club also sold $530 worth of Raffle tickets and another $2000 in Memberships and T-shirts! Andrew Brown from Calgary won the Intense Tracer 275 frame, hand made at the Intense factory in Southern California. Andrew said, “I love riding in Fernie and look forward to returning to ride my new Intense!”

The 2nd annual Fernie Enduro offered ideal trail conditions as a field of 100 riders descended some of Fernie best trails.

Staged from Island Lake Lodges lower parking lot the riders rode Verboten, Slunt/Brokenback and Project 9 with dry and dust free trails in favourable cool weather conditions. Local participant Ryland Nelson said, “The trails are as close to perfect as they can be!”

With great trail conditions the riders posted extremely fast race times averaging over 60kmh on the descents. Top rider was Nick Quinn from Fernie with a time of 21:02.6.
