Route

The course route selection has been slow due to the above average snowpack however we have the course we desired and with no extreme rain should have ready to go on race day. Our mandate was to make the most enjoyable stages ever and with Martin Vale and Jesse Mong helping design the course, and Pat Gilmar flagging—you will enjoy exceptional flow and intuitiveness. These routes continue to be worked on and improved and will be slightly modified from these files on race day.

Fernie 3 celebrates best of Fernie

Fernie 3 celebrates best of Fernie

When the 150plus riders line up in front of the Fernie Hotel to begin their three day mountain bike stage race they will be celebrating the best of Fernie.

This years stage routes have been meticulously fretted upon by local racers and chosen to be the best ever. Fun, flow, passing, socializing and endless single-track have been the driving ideology. The crew will be a enthusiastic group of Fernie mountain bike riders giving their time to raise monies for trails. And the brand is all Fernie and to celebrate we have created the ultimate race jersey in association with a local artist, Morgan Dunnet.

Morgan Dunnet

Morgan’s rendering of Fernie’s historic downtown with the Lizard Range in the background jersey has been transformed into the Fernie 3 race jersey. The orange of the historic brick balances with the Fernie 3 brand colour to create a stunning and contemporary piece of memorabilia.

Fernie 3 jersey

Morgan Dunnet was born and raised in Fernie, B.C. Growing up in a small town did not provide much excitement but it forced him to find creative means of enjoyment. He became an avid drawer in his pre-teens and at 14 picked up his first paintbrush. Through high school Dunnet was self-taught and after graduation moved to Toronto and studied the foundations of art at Sheridan College. From Toronto he moved to Vancouver and entered Capilano College’s IDEA programme. “There are few things in life as challenging and rewarding as painting. The fact that it never gets easier has a remarkable appeal to me”.

Prints and originals of Morgan Dunnet’s art are available at Clawhammer Press in downtown Fernie.

Registration is open for the Fernie 3 for another two weeks and we could still use a volunteer or two. For more information email fts@fernie.com

Fernie 3 Stage Routes Coming together

Fernie 3 Stage Routes Coming together

Everyone knows that Fernie is best known for it’s epic skiing and this season was outstanding—we received 140% of our average snowpack. And that snowpack continues to linger at higher elevations and this delay will influence the planning of the Fernie 3 routing. Fortunately we have lots of options, a great crew and are working to ensure a low impact course with the best singletrack riding.

Part of the crew is local rider Martin Vale, Race Director, who started building mountain bike trails in Victoria during the mid 1980’s purely for the love of the sport. These early trails provided the foundation for host of world class mountain bike riders including the likes of Ryder Hesjedal, Andreas Hestler, Roland Green and Geoff Kabush putting Victoria on the map on the world scene as the place to be for mountain biking. When Martin moved to Fernie, fulltime in 2006, he recognized the potential for Fernie to become one of the quintessential mountain bike destination spots in the world. Some of Martin’s race results include:
Test of metal champion – Squamish BC 1993
Canadian x-country National Champion – Whistler BC 1996
TransRockies overall Open Men champion with teammate Carter Hovey – Fernie 2011
Furious 3 overall Open Men champion – Fernie 2011

Fernie TransRockies Martin VAle and Carter Hovey

Martin comments, “Route selection will make the most challenging stage on Day 2, flanked on Day 1 and 3 with easier stages with gradual warmup climbs. The routes will spread the racers to minimize congestion on the singeletrack.” Martin is working with Pat Gilmar, multi-time TransRockies Finisher, course planner, and Fernie trail-builder extraordinaire, as the course marking lead. Minimizing impact includes avoiding and mitigating wet areas, here Martin and Pat are building a new bridge over a mud-hole on Stove trail.

Fernie Trailwork

Below is a working map of Stage 1 to give you and idea of what to expect. Stage 2 and 3 will be finalized soon. Sad news is that Project 9 has been whipped out by a spring avalanche and will have to be rebuilt. The closest you’ll get to Project 9 in the Fernie 3 is drinking Fernie Beer’s new Project 9 Pil at the finish line!
