Blackstone Fernie TransRockies to Celebrate Epic Finish!

The world-renown TransRockies Challenge mountain bike race announced a new first this year, with a finish in Fernie, BC. Local organizers of the Blackstone Fernie TransRockies are gearing up for what promises to be the biggest event of the summer.

Fernie will host more than 3000 participants, volunteers, organizers and visitors as part of the celebrations at the finish line. The race, which draws riders from around the globe, begins in Panorama one week earlier and takes participants through the Kootenay Rockies in a grueling 600 km challenge. Over 500 riders are expected to finish the race in Fernie, and they will be welcomed this year with an array of celebration activities.

Blackstone Fernie TransRockies is celebrating the finish with a new event, the Blackstone Bike Rally, for kids’ aged 4 – 8. This mini-rally will take kids through a fun and educational experience around Fernie’s downtown. Beginning at the Guides Hut, with stops at Carosella, the Fernie Fire Station, and Overwaitea, the rally ends at the Arts Station. Throughout, kids will have the opportunity for fun events like face painting and bike decorating, and enjoy nutritional snacks. Pre-registration is free will be held at the Guides Hut in downtown Fernie.

Fernie locals will no doubt cheer a little louder for their official hometown teams this year. Several legendary local riders have banded together to take up the challenge – the highest number of Fernie teams ever entered into the TransRockies. The Blackstone Fernie Goats are Ron Clark and Pat Gilmar; The Blackstone Fernie Grizzlies are Arthur Sombrowski and Brendan Morgan; and the Blackstone Fernie Wolverines are Todd Loewen and Sean Staplin.

In addition, spectators are invited to partake in a cool beverage alongside the finishers. It will be held adjacent to the finish line at CP Station Square.

As with any major community event, the Blackstone Fernie TransRockies is in need of local assistance from volunteers. For those who are interested in volunteering, please email transrockies@fernie.com, or call 423-4727.

Mountain bike races abound

Mountain bike races abound

This coming summer mountain bike races abound in Fernie. The Fernie 3 mountain bike race is being held on July 1st to 3rd and the Singletrack 6 (ST6) will be hosting two stages on July 23 to 24th.

The Fernie 3 is an all-mountain three-day classic mountain bike stage race. This year’s Fernie 3 is being held on the Canada Day weekend, July 1 to 3rd. The Fernie 3 organizers work to offer events for all riders including a one-day option, U16 and the Kids’ Bike Rally for U9. In 2015 the Fernie 3 raised $8000 for trails and generated over $200,000 in economic benefit for the community.

The ST6 is the recreation and rebranding of the TransRockies Challenge, an event that Fernie hosted for 12 consecutive years and some people credit for placing Fernie on the world mountain bike stage. The ST6 is a 6 day adventure showcasing the best riding in a variety of mountain bike communities. The 1st ST6 toured the Northern Rockies with stages in Canmore, Invermere, Golden and Revelstoke. This past summer the ST6 visited Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton. The 2016 ST6 will leave Fernie and continue on in the Kootenays with stages in Cranbrook, Kimberley and finish in Golden.

The Fernie TransRockies Society (FTS) organizes the Fernie 3 and will also be helping organize the Fernie’s involvement in the ST6. The FTA was formed in 2002 to support Fernie’s involvement with the TransRockies Challenge and worked on all of the events. The FTS is a group of local riders whose goal is to help develop Fernie’s destination mountain biking. They achieve this by hosting events that raise monies to support trial maintenance and development, develop local racers and inspire youth, and promote Fernie as mountain biking destination. “It’s great to have two great events in Fernie, the ST6 brings international riders and a high caliber of racing and the Fernie 3 has something for everyone” stated Dan Savage, FTS Director.

The FTS looks forward to working with the events supporters and community stakeholders in coming months to help make these events a success for everyone.

Lucky 7’s a Success Despite Weather

Lucky 7’s a Success Despite Weather

The Fernie Lucky 7’s were a success despite the weather. The forecast looked grim all week and Saturday morning the skies opened just as the U15 girls and boys were about to start at 9am. Despite the rain, and weather cancellations, all events were held with no injuries or trail damage.

The Fernie Lucky 7’s, organized by the Fernie Transrockies Society (FTS), earned a round of applause from the participants. The riders were mostly from Alberta and the Elk Valley and the event is a cross-country solo and relay event that caters to all abilities looking for a fun experience. Competitive endurance and XC racers were challenged in the 7-hour solo and team category events. Families, youth and company teams loved the team participation and fun course.

The participants ranged from two to 70 in age! Solo riders pedaled up to 95kms, and a mix of teams and solo riders earned seven laps in the seven-hour event. The Kids’ Bike Rally enjoyed its 12th year and a one lap U15 girls and boys race was hotly contested.

The applause was based on the fun that was packed into the day. Sam Moffat kept the crowd moving with his music and the food and beverage was excellent. Volunteers from the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, the Fernie Nordic Society and the Fernie Trails & Ski Touring Club ensured a swift execution and organized event. Everyone had a fun experience and most left with amazing prizes from Gearhub Sports.

SEE THE RESULTS HERE.

Lucky 7 prize winners included top finishers in all categories and lucky winners from Gearhub’s Lucky 7’s Craps table. All participants rolled the fuzzy dice for each lap completed and the top rolls were winners. Everyone was a winner in the Fernie Lucky 7’s!

We have these great sponsors to thank for the events success: GearHub Sports, Rocky Mountain, The City of Fernie, Teck, Fernie Brewing Company, The Bridge Bistro, Montane Fernie, Park Place Lodge, Fernie Alpine Resort, Honey Stinger, and Fernie Alpine Resort.

The FTS is a not-for-profit society with 15 years of history organizing mountain bike events in Fernie. It began with the TransRockies Challenge in 2002 and moved on to Canada Cup Mountain biking, the Fernie Enduro, the Fernie 3 and now the Fernie Lucky 7’s. The FTS’s mandate has been to promote biking with all age groups, raise monies for trails, and increase destination bike visitors. In their 16 years of managing Fernie bike events they have generated over $50,000 in funding for trails and recreational organizations.

Here is a visual recap of the event:
