The Fernie Ghostriders welcome you to the 2014-2015 KIJHL season at their home opener this Saturday, Sept. 27th.

The team has made several changes to for the 20014-15 season and the biggest change you’ll see is on the bench. The new Head Coach and General Manager is Craig Mohr. Fans will remember that Mohr coached the Riders in 2004-06 before moving on to coach several different teams in two different leagues and was most recently an assistant Coach and GM with the Calgary Canucks. When Coach/GM Dale Hladun’s contract wasn’t renewed at the end of last season Mohr applied and was hired. Barb Anderson is now in her second year as the Ghostrider’s President.

The first thing Coach Mohr did when he came to Fernie was hand over the Captain’s C to Dylan Robertson who is now in his fifth and final year with the Team. Aaron Neufeld, Travis Thomsen and Joel Burgess are the assistant Captains this year as well.

The Riders have several returning players on the roster this season. Dylan Robertson, Travis Thomsen, Kale Johnston, Joel Burgess, Aaron Neufeld, Spencer Bender, Cole Keebler and Randy Teeple. The Assistant Coaches are Shawn Potyok, James Ouimet, Gerry Pang and Jeff Zmurchyk.

Saturday’s Game

After last weekend the Ghostriders had a 3-1 record. They won 7-1 in Kelowna, 3-2 in North Oakanagan but lost 3-1 in Summerland last weekend. The Riders were in Invermere last night. Randy Teeple, Cole Keebler and Spencer Bender are day to day with injuries.

The Golden Rockets are at home to Beaver Valley Friday night and had a 3-2-0-1 record after last weekend. They won last weekend vs Creston but lost at home to Osoyoos.

Ghostrider Notebook

Dylan Robertson scored a shorthanded goal in Kelowna, he scored 4 of them last year. Jeff Orser got the win in net in Kelowna and was the player of the game. Justin Peers was the player of the game in Summerland. Forwards Sam Plaquin, Dylan Robertson and Justin Peers each had 4 points in the first four games while Tyler Rebelato leads the defense with 3 points. The Ghostriders got their first win of the year on the road in Invermere Saturday night. The Riders led 2-0 after one 3-0 after two and 4-2 at the end of the game.

Kale Johnston scored the Riders first goal unassisted then Sam Plaquin scored on the PP from Ty Rebelato and Joel Burgess.

Tayler Sincennes scored the lone goal in the second on the PP from Dave Kelly and Dylan Robertson.

In the third the Rockies scored two, Sam Young-Ryan Lawson then Matt Bruyer scored unassisted to make it 3-2. The Rockies scored another goal but it was disallowed much to the dismay of the Rockies and Fernie radio announcer Kyle Christensen who thought it should have counted. Anyway Sam Plaquin scored his second on the night with 1:04 left in the game for the win.

The Riders outshot the Rockies 41-19 and had a big advantage in the good scoring chances as well. The Rockies discipline hurt them. Doan Smith took a 5 minute goaltender interference penalty in the first costing them a goal and goalie Brody Nelson attacked Kale Johnston in the third and got 5 for fighting hurting the Rockies chances of getting back into the game.

Overall it was a pretty good outing for the Riders in their first road game of the year. Unfortunately Captain Dylan Robertson was assessed a minor for head contact, and they are cumulative so eventually turn into suspensions. We are still waiting for the KIJHL to release the new Junior “B” Supplement but I hear that most of the rules are the same as last season.

Notes
Jeff Orser got the win in net even after he was attacked in the first… The Radio gave Sam Plaquin the first star,Joel Burgess the second star and Rockies Matt Bruyerthe third star… Josh McCulloch hit the post 3 times…Dustin Watt got a skate to the face in his first game as a Ghostrider after coming over from Golden.
·
Big shout out to Dustin Watt for taking a skate to the face and taken’ 16 stitches like a beauty.

Ghostriders Main Camp Report September 1, 2014

The Fernie Ghostriders Main Camp is over, although there were only two teams at the camp the talent level was pretty good considering that about 15 players didn’t show up because they are still in junior “A” camps.

The surprise of the camp to me was the sheer number of good 16 year old players trying out for the Ghost. From the Elk Valley alone there were six. Dalton Bouvier, Kyle Haugo, Evan Pumphrey, Evan Traverse, Jacen Richards and Trevor Broad. If these guys play midget this year and work hard there will be a glut of KIJHL ready seventeen year olds next year. And these weren’t the only 16’s, there were more, but to this writer two of them seem to be a bit ahead of the others. Cavin Tilsley (Delta BC) and Liam Murphy (Cranbrook BC)both players were fun to watch.

If the other teams in the province have this many 98’s it will be a good year for hockey next year. (Junior teams can only have two 98 born players.

Coach Mohr signed two players out of the camp, D-man Ty Rebelato 1995- Calgary AB and forward David Kelly 1996 also from Calgary. Mohr also is expecting goaltender Jeff Orserfrom the Calgary Mustangs here next week as well.
