Ghostrider News November 14/07

Friday night before the Spokane game we will be honoring the late Doctor East at the start of the game. All longtime Fernie residents will know that Dr. East was a big hockey fan and great supporter of local hockey here in Fernie and he dedicated a large part of his life to working as a team Doctor for local hockey teams. Fifty years ago it was the Fernie Rangers Senior Team then it was the Fernie Jr. Sabers then on to the Elk Valley Blazers Senior Team in the eighty’s. Dr East also quietly made donations to the Ghostriders Hockey Club at a time when the team was in financial trouble. The young people in the audience may not know this but Dr. East likely delivered many of your parents or grandparents and he will be fondly remembered by everyone in Fernie.

The Ghostriders won both of their games last weekend 5-3 at home against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and 2-1 in Castlegar. Last Tuesday night the Ghostriders traveled to Creston where they had a five game win streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to the Thundercats. Creston will play here in Fernie Next Saturday November 24.

Friday’s Game

Last summer the KIJHL expanded by one team and the City of Chase was awarded a franchise. With the expansion the KIJHL now had 16 teams so there had to be a realignment of teams to get four, 4 team divisions. With the realignment the Ghostriders went from the Eddie Mountain Division to the Neil Murdoch East Division with Spokane, Creston and Kimberley so Friday’s game is a divisional rivalry. The last time these teams played was October 7th in Spokane where the Riders lost 4-3. Twenty year old Bret Kellogg with 26 points is Spokane’s top scorer and he was also Spokane’s nominee for the KIJHL Player of the Month. The Ghostriders nominee was defenseman Cody Reinbold.

Odds n’ Ends
