Join fine artist Michael Hepher for an introduction to the art of plein air painting, the style of painting directly from and in nature.

Michael Hepher is a blacksmith, musician, printmaker, and has recently returned to his previous passion of painting landscapes. His work is reminiscent of the Group of Seven and he often travels with a pochade box to transport his studies, as many of the Group of Seven artists did.

The workshop will meet at the Fernie Museum and begin with instruction on how to chose a plein air spot. Then spend the day painting with Mike. The workshop will include basic set-up, composition and painting techniques.

$100 | Includes one canvas board, paintbrush, basic paints, and instruction.

Bring along any other paints and brushes you would like to use, plus a chair, easel, and umbrella.

The workshop includes a break for lunch. Bring your own, or return to downtown Fernie for lunch.

Michael’s exhibit, Backroads BC is currently on display in the gallery at the Fernie Museum. The show features 28 original landscapes in oil, inspired by the artist’s summer 2017 roadtrip through the lesser-known routes around British Columbia with his family in their 1971 VW camper ‘Truman.’ The exhibition includes journal entries, studies and other supporting materials to create an immersive and inspirational journey across BC.
