Indie Jazz Vocalist Andrea Superstein is playing at the Arts Station.

You have to know the rules in order to break them. Andrea Superstein knows the rules. And she breaks them. Gleefully, taking swing, blues, Latin and ballad and subtly infusing pop, indie rock and other unexpected styles and elements, she as Tom Harrison, music critic for the Vancouver Province, said, is “redefining jazz.” Playing on her eclectic tastes and broad musical knowledge, Superstein takes listeners on a musical trip that starts in Tin Pan Alley and twists its way to today. Re-envisioning standards like I Love Paris, giving them a trip-hop facelift, while turning pop anthems like Venus into dark sultry film noir scores, she has the unique capability of finding new ways to interpret familiar songs. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, Superstein comes along with a fresh take, and a stellar voice to boot. Think Peggy Lee meets Portishead.

She hits the road in support of her latest release, What Goes On, produced by Juno-winner Les Cooper, which debuted at #1 on CKUA, hit #4 on the Canadian Jazz chart, reached #16 on CMJ and listed as one of the top 5 vocal jazz albums of the year on earshot.

Superstein will perform arrangements from the record, as well as preview some new arrangements and original compositions which she will be recording later this year in conjunction with 4-time JUNO nominee Elizabeth Shepherd.

Tickets available at the Arts Station.
