Hosmer Put in/Fernie Take out??
March 17, 2014 at 7:46 am #24407
New to the area, not new to paddling. I had a scouting mission along the Hosmer area and am curious if it is possible/safe to put in at the Elk Valley Provincial park day use area (just a few kilometres East of Hosmer) and float towards Fernie?
Can anyone mention a good take out as well around the Townsite?
Any comments about best time to run this stretch, time to do this run, hazards or any other comments would be appreciated.. Thanks!March 17, 2014 at 10:06 am #24408
The Elk Valley Provincial park to Fernie section ranges from a class 3 in high water in June to a class 1 in low water. The class 3 high water rating relates to the log-jam hazard which has claimed a few lives.
The best takeouts in Fernie are at the North Fernie bridge or Dogwood Park boat launch.
Experienced boaters only should run at high water. Low water is a fun float. Log hazard always exists however is more manageable at lower levels.
Have fun!March 17, 2014 at 10:40 am #24409
Hey… good advice. Any idea (generally) where this log jam hazard exists? Im sure there are certain corners or turns along the river bank where this happens through out the season.
Thanks for the advice
