Island Lake’s Lazy Lizard trail has been completed and connects Island Lake’s winter parking lot with their upper lodges. This connector trail is relatively wide and low gradient and is easy and fun to ride for most riders. It is Fernie’s best built bike trail and is a must ride.
Backcountry Trail Experts, a local company operated by Luke Nelson (pictured above) and Henry Hungerford Barrett, have built the trail along with some volunteer help by local trail clubs.
The trail is wider that single track with a consistent low gradient and has four or five fun berms on the slightly steeper upper section. Lazy Lizard is Fernie’s most family friendly trail so get out and enjoy–it is fun for everyone!
Advanced riders can find lots of other trails on Mount Fernie and Fernie Mountain Park to add to Lazy Lizard for a larger ride. Project 9 and Slunt are two epic rides on Mount Fernie that have punishing climbs and epic descents. On the FAR side, Black Forest has been cleared and is riding very well. Verboten also remains a locals favourite. Both trails can be accessed by Gorby Trail.
With the recent rain the trails are near perfect–riding in Fernie is as good as it gets, enjoy!
