Park Place Lodge

Fernie trail conditions continue to be excellent. The lower valley trails have been great for months and now the Alpine trails are riding well. Big Money, Watering Hole, Al Matador, Dirt Diggler to name a few are putting big smiles on riders faces.

For hikers Island Lake Lodge opened on June 12th and their trails are in excellent shape. Enjoy a gourmet meal and spa visit after an epic hike in the stunning Lizard Range. The Lazy Lizard, a intermediate bike trail, starting at the Island Lake gate, is riding and progressing very well. The Backcountry Expert crew, Luke and Henry, are busy pushing the trail through to the lodge. This has become one of Fernie’s premier trails, be sure to give it a spin.

Fernie Alpine Resort opens on June 27th for a summer of lift serviced biking and hiking. They also are continuing with their Thursday night race series. Locals day is Sunday July 5th.

My choice for ride of the week is Project 9. Located off the Lazy Lizard this epic climb and downhill is a freeriders prize. It’s so epic Fernie Brewing named one of their craft beers after it. Tag the ride with the Lazy Lizard for an very nice two hour adventure.

There have been frequent reports of bears in the area so Gorby Trail and in the Ridgemont and Castle. Some of the reports are mother’s with cubs. Please use caution as always and be prepared and expect to encounter wildlife anytime.

The Safest Wildlife Encounter is One Prevented

Avoid surprise encounters: Call out, clap your hands, sing or talk loudly

Look for signs of wildlife: Tracks, droppings, diggings, claw-marked trees, torn-up logs, overturned rocks and food caches.

Travel smart: Stay in groups, stay on marked trails and travel in daylight.

Do not litter: Pack it in, pack it out.

Carry bear spray: Keep it accessible and know how to use it as your last best defense.

Dog owners: keep your dogs under control. They may provoke defensive behavior in wildlife.

Cyclists: speed and quietness put you at risk for sudden encounters. Slow down and make noise.
