Cokato Road remains closed between the 4500 block and Morrissey due to flooding and muddy debris in more than one location.

“There is a four-kilometre section of Cokato Road from one kilometre west of Robinson Road to the cattleguard near Morrissey Road that is blocked on either end at this time, which affects egress for 36 properties,” explains Duczek. “While we are waiting for more detailed information on how and when access can be restored, we want to hear from residents in that affected area. We are asking them to call the Information Line so that we can get contact information and a clearer idea of the impacts, if any, on their properties.” The information line is 1-855-346-2188.

The RDEK has requested an aerial assessment and is coordinating with the Ministries of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) and Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations, and Rural Development to have experts in the air during the assessment. In addition, the MOTI and Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting have mobilized equipment and are responding in several other locations around the Fernie area.

“We also have localized flooding in the Hosmer area and are in the process of establishing a sandbag station in Hosmer this afternoon,” adds Duczek. “With additional rain in the forecast into tonight, when it may turn to snow, we are encouraging all residents of the East Kootenay to remain aware and prepared.”
In addition, the RDEK has set up a Damage Assessment Report for property owners who’ve experienced damage as a result of localized flooding since Saturday.

“The goal of the Damage Assessment is to allow us to gain better situational data from around the region from people whose properties have been impacted during this heavy rainfall event,” explains Information Officer Loree Duczek. A page has been set up for people to access and fill out the forms online at: https://engage.rdek.bc.ca/damagereport

A detour remains in effect on Highway 3 east of Fernie at Dicken Road and crews are on site on Highway 3 south of Fernie assessing impacts there. For the latest information on highway conditions, visit www.drivebc.ca.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
