Recently the East Kootenay Foundation for Health launched a fundraiser to purchase a new ultrasound for the Elk Valley Hospital. Here is an article which aptly summarizes why the community needs a new ultrasound at the Elk Valley Hospital.

The Elk Valley Medical Staff Association have been petitioning for this service for the last three years and now Interior Health is willing to support it going forward but the community needs to pay for the capital costs (put our money where our mouth is).

The Elk Valley Epic is a event aimed at helping raising funds for the ultrasound. We do have a few active folk in Fernie and the Elk Valley Trail is world class!

The event will happen this September 5-6, be approximately 74km in length, start in Elkford and take the Elk Valley Trail through Sparwood and finish in Fernie. The event is being organized by the Fernie Mountain Bike Club as a third party fundraiser.

Teck will match up to $50K for all business and community donations made prior to September 30, 2020. So, every registration will basically be doubled in support of the ultrasound service.

Mountain bike, road bike, run or even walk the distance from Elkford to Sparwood and then on to Fernie. Go the full distance, go half the distance, do whatever you want on either September 5 or 6th.

Elk Valley Epic 2020 Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. What is the route?
A. Really…it is pretty loose and it is up to you. We’ll have the exact route on Trailforks very soon. You can ride from Elkford to Sparwood to Fernie or any portion of that trail. There will be an aid station in Sparwood with COVID19 friendly snacks. Ride a little or ride a lot – it’s up to you.

Q. How long do I have to complete the route?
A. Again, there is a lot of flexibility on this. You can do it in one go or you can do it over the two days. We already had a father and son complete it last week as they are not available for the September long weekend.

Q. Do I have to mountain bike?
A. No, we have had inquiries about hiking sections as well as road biking and….(insert G-A-S-P)…running the distance!

Q. Do I have to be a member of the FMBC?
A. Yes, our event insurance requires you to be a member of the FMBC. We have Pandemic pricing this year where some levels of memberships are $5.
