South Country is a spring paradise for Fernie’s snowbound hikers and bikers and trail options are about to improve.

The Koocanusa Recreation Steering Committee (Recreation Sites and Trails BC) has hired a contractor to establish the Elk Rim Non-Motorized Recreation (mountain bike) Trail.

The trail work contributes to implementation of the Koocanusa Recreation Strategy.

The trail contractor entered into contract with Recreation Sites and Trails BC and the project will be managed by an independent consultant (the KRSC Coordinator) on behalf of the KRSC. This project occurs on the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation.

Work has started this week and will take about one month to complete. About 16 kilometers of trail will be upgraded or newly established and signed.

All of the work will be hand built by a four person crew with minimal soil disturbance in the sensitive grasslands and forest.
