Fernie was just chosen as the #1 most underrated ski area in North America by Experts Advise in Men’s Journal. They got everything right but the count of on-mountain restaurants–we know the restaurants are in town and rival some of the best anywhere.

Here is what Jayme Moye and Ryan Krogh had to say:

Ski resorts in British Columbia will always be overshadowed by Whistler Blackcomb, the biggest (and arguably the best) ski resort in North America. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t exceptional skiing to be had elsewhere in the province. Fernie puts up more consistent snow than Whistler, and warmer temps (an average of 25 F), than nearby Banff, which means more of the light, fluffy powder known as champagne, and more often. Sure, the resort is smaller, but only relative to giants like Whistler. Fernie has more expert terrain than most other resorts have in total, including five back bowls that are usually buried — with up to 37 feet of snow per season. Fernie may not be as happening as Whistler, but not all of us are looking to see and be seen on our ski holidays. Besides, how many on-mountain restaurants do you really need? (Fernie has nine.)
