On Sunday, September 5, the City of Fernie and CP Rail held a very special ceremony and announcement in the newly constructed square adjacent to The Arts Station.

CP Rail has donated $60,000 to the City of Fernie for the revitalization of The Arts Station, which will be matched by the City of Fernie. In recognition of this donation, the square has been named “Canadian Pacific Station Square”.

The renovations to the historic train station that now serves as Fernie’s cultural hub will include a replacement of the windows, repainting and renovation of the deck.

The City of Fernie has commissioned two brick gateposts at the entrance to the square on 6th street that will be fitted with plaques to officially name the square and commemorate the year of its inception.

Fernie residents and visitors have already enjoyed Canadian Pacific Station Square at the recent Blackstone TransRockies Festival and Labour Day celebrations. On Labour Day, the square was further honoured with a visit from the CPR Empress, the historic 1930s steam train and the “jewel in the crown” of the railway.

Canadian Pacific Station Square has created an excellent way for Fernie to showcase the newly revitalized historic downtown while hosting special events.
