Schickedanz Bros and Elk River Developments announced this week that they had chosen a winner for the “Name Our Lake” contest that was held last month and open to all Fernie school children.

After receiving and reviewing more than 75 entries from students in every Fernie school, “Maiden Lake” was chosen as the winning entry by Schickedanz Bros and Elk River Developments. The entry was submitted by Jack Haigh, a grade 6 student at Isabella Dicken Elementary School.

Jack explained in his entry that he picked the name because of the Lake’s location in Ghostrider Crossing, and because of the maiden walking beside the Rider on Hosmer Mountain, a reference to Fernie’s famous shadow legend.

“We thought Jack’s suggestion was original and a great fit for the location,” said Fred Schickedanz, Schickedanz Bros. “The name ‘Maiden Lake’ ties in perfectly with the Ghostrider, a story that’s so well known in Fernie, and also a striking image that’s very visible from the lake itself.”

Schickedanz Bros and Elk River Developments also extended a thank you to all the participating Fernie students.

“We’d like to thank all the students who participated in the contest – we had a great response from all the schools and it was a really tough decision,” added Schickedanz.

Jack , family and friends joined Roland Kraemer of Schickedanz Bros, Peter Molander of Elk River Developments, and Randal Macnair Mayor, at an official naming and ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday August 6th. As the winner, Jack received a voucher for a free dinner for himself and family courtesy of Boston Pizza, plus a $100 cash prize.
