Fernie Opening Day

Naturally I only remember the epic opening days, epic being endless powder. Well today wasn’t epic however it was great to be skiing and to see such a solid base with the potential for epic skiing. Bring on the next storm!

Regardless of epic conditions the usual gang lines up for first lift before sunrise. In Robin Siggers photo below stands Greg Burrows of “Edge of the World” in classic form. He’s been first in line for the past 15 years. If your looking for Greg’s board shop it’s moved to Victoria Avenue, across from Ski Base and Commit and beside Straightline.

I skied with my 6 year old daughter Chloe and she asked why there were so many plants on the runs. I explained that it is early season and they’ll be covered soon. Today was a family day in Fernie, all the locals were out skiing with their kids. And our weekend population made a strong showing filling the upper parking lot with vehicles.

Here is a shot taken by Joe Howse of his family, Sadie and Indika. They own and operate the Raging Elk Hostel and are enjoying opening day. The Kodiak lounge is a must for a cold cheap pint and a great burger on Friday.

After a few runs on the Elk Chloe and I enjoyed a great lunch at Lizard Creek Lodge. The setting is pleasing, the food is great and the service is excellent. I definitely recommend Lizard Creek and these girls will help ensure your for your next good experience.

Tomorrow I adult skiing and looking forward to finding good snow and wacking some alder!

The upper mountain skied really well! The last storm cycle that rained 60mm in the valley brought most of the Alder brush down, opening the bowls and ridges for great skiing. Lizard and Cedar Bowls were open and Cascade, Dancer, Cedar Main, to name a few–skied very well.

I’m looking forward to skiing the Dark side on Friday’s re-opening!
