Text and Photos by Gerry George,

Well Mother Nature tried, but came up a bit short this weekend, to provide a bit of winter to valley. Saturday started off with a big snowstorm in the morning but it never continued long enough to make a significant impact to the freshies that everyone has been so desperately craving.

Sunday started off almost exactly opposite with crystal clear skies but by lunchtime the snow squalls were tearing across the mountain slopes. Once again, what looked like a major system, fizzled rapidly into sunshine and broken clouds.

People are still skiing mind you and making the best of what has not been a stellar year. There is still coverage up top and ways to get down if you are keen. It seems that most people are ready to give up on the season and get started with spring.

Members of the Fernie mountain bike club, taking advantage of the mild temperatures, worked on re-habilitating the Sidewinder Trail above Fernie on Saturday to get it ready for the summer biking season. It still needs a lot of work and if you are interested in helping out, they are more than happy to have you along. You can contact the club by emailing fmbc@fernie.com.

While people are gearing up for spring and the flowers beginning to show, it looks like a “major storm” is heading this way by Wednesday with downright cold temperatures and serious snow. Will it happen? We will have to wait and see.
