Text and Photos by Gerry George,
Sunny and warm was the call for this weekend. Actually the entire week has been like this and it sure is nice. The days are getting longer and Spring seems to be on its way. A bit early mind you but on its way none the less. My neighbour was out on his rooftop enjoying the rays on Saturday. Sitting back soaking up the sun.
The weekend was spent carving around the mountain on my alpine snowboard. I haven’t ridden it much the past few years but some friends I met at Big White last weekend kind of re-ignited the spark. It sure feels great to lean into a nice heelside turn and just feel the edge carve around on a perfect arc.
The grooming was pretty good for carving. The snow is firm but has good edge hold. There are the occasional icy sections to watch out for but overall pretty good snow. During the afternoons the sun was turning the southern aspects soft and gloopy and in some locations, brown. Yup, there are holes opening up on some runs which is kind of scary.
Still you can generally avoid the bad areas if you are careful and still find plenty of killer snow to enjoy.
No crowds around either. The mountain was pretty quite all weekend. Very laid back.
Forecast is for continuing mild conditions through out the week. Will the snow return? I hope so. It would be great to get a few good face shots in before the bike comes out for good. March is generally good for a few rogue storms.
