Springtime has officially begun and the weather has continued to be very spring like indeed. Snow levels in town have rapidly shrunk and the street cleaners are out getting rid of the accumulations of gravel laid down over the winter.
I was quite surprised how many people were at the mountain on the weekend. Perhaps it was just that only X amount of runs were worth skiing so everybody was congregated in the same place.Conditions ranged from rock solid, downright scary, boilerplate ice to ultra mooshy, wet and sloppy corn snow; often all during one run depending on what aspect you happened to be skiing. The sun never really made a dominant appearance on the weekend. Instead it hid behind a thin veil of cloud keeping the boilerplate in the shade just that, boilerplate.
And in a twist of irony, the extreme skiing competition was cancelled because the conditions were just too extreme. One could argue that boilerplate steeps would be a fantastic way for skiers to truly show off their skiing skills but a contest was never worth dying for.
The crocus is from my front yard, the first bit of vegetative colour in the year 2004. Lets hope it gets buried under a blanket of snow at least a few more times before the season finally draws to and end. There is always hope. Last year the best snow was in April.
