Despite needing a good deal of encouragement to get me up there, once we stood at the top of the Bear on Sunday, I couldnt have been happier. Mild temperatures, zero line-ups and soft conditions on the groomers made me remember how fun Spring at the hill can be.
The top portions of Lizard and Cedar were closed, so we took a couple of fast and fun runs via Sunny Side, through some glades that had seen some recent snow and while heavy and pretty chopped up, were still fun (and empty). The lower portions of the hill were slushy, as is to be expected from recent rainfall, but there was still good coverage throughout so the ski-outs were not a problem.
Next we made our way to the new side, again heading for the trees and enjoying two or three runs off the top of White Pass through upper Currie. Here we hit both hardpack and crud in spots, but again there was good coverage and as I took to the trees for the second time I realized just what a blast I was having. Both Marc and I agreed that we felt like the only ones on the mountain at that moment, and we were loving it.
My favorite part of the day was a last rip down through the glades into a practically empty Currie Powder (soft, but not so slow that I couldnt enjoy the ride), as a few errant snowflakes followed me to the bottom. I left wondering whether the onset of Spring skiing conditions held the same weight as the 20cm rule.
