The Avalanche City Roller Girls will host the third of five local roller derby events on Saturday June 21st. The bout will be held in Sparwood and the adult women’s team will play the Thrashin’ Lassies from the Calgary Roller Derby Association in a single header event. The game is in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and part of the proceeds will be donated to CCS. ACRG will be donning yellow Relay for Life t-shirts instead of their usual red jerseys to show their support.

East Kootenay Roller Derby Semi Finals - Scrap to the Future

The Calgary Roller Derby Association got their start in 2006, with the Thrashin’ Lassies’ team being formed in 2008. The CRDA itself has an all-star team and is now an apprentice league to the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association, meaning they are working hard to meet requirements in order to become a full-fledged member league of WFTDA.

The Thrasin’ Lassies are a well-established team, and should bring a challenging game to ACRG but the hometown team is confident they will come away with the win. The teams have never played each before and ACRG are eager to see how they stack up against new competition. ACRG will play another CRDA team, the B52 Bellas, in Calgary later this summer.

The family-friendly event takes place this Saturday at the Sparwood Rec Plex. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first whistle is at 7:00 p.m. It’s $10 for adults and $5 for Relay for Life participants, volunteers and kids, and ages 11 and under are free.
