The City of Fernie council unanimously passed a resolution in support of the BC Citizens Concerned About Coalbed Methane coalition’s five-point plan to  build a safe future for CBM at the January 12th Council Meeting.

This adds to the 500 individual signatures of support that have been gathered since the launch of the Coalition in December. This number is growing everyday and It is hoped that other communities will be signing on in support of this action plan in the near future.

The plan, “Building a safe future for CBM,” calls for the following

Suspend CBM drilling across B.C. until four key policy improvements are in place:

  2. Local communities have a clear say in deciding where and how CBM projects proceed
  3. CBM projects undergo mandatory environmental assessments that address cumulative impacts
  4. “World-class” CBM regulations promised in B.C.’s Energy Plan are fully implemented and enforced
  5. Funds are dedicated to independent baseline research and to proving the safety of “world-class” technologies.
